Cancellation policy
We take full payment on booking. Our cancellation policy is simple; if we can re-let the room we will make you a full refund. The earlier you cancel, the more likely we are to be able to re-let. Please make sure that you have travel insurance that will cover your costs in case you need to cancel.
Private access road to the lighthouse
The last three miles from Melvaig to Rua Reidh Lighthouse is on a very narrow single track private road which has three fragile bridges, with strict weight, width and speed restrictions. The road is suitable for light traffic (i.e. cars) only. Motorhomes and caravans are prohibited. Vehicle access to the lighthouse is for booked guests only.
Check-in and Check-out
Check-in time is from 5pm-10pm (unless you have booked dinner in which case you need to arrive by 7pm), and check-out is by 10am please.
Quiet policy
In keeping with the tranquility of the surroundings, we run Rua Reidh as a ‘quiet house’, so we ask our guests not to play loud music or use noisy electronic devices in the house or grounds please. The majority of our guests are visiting us to appreciate the solitude and remoteness here, so we ask you to respect this.
Disabled access
By its nature, Rua Reidh is not ideally suited for disabled access or those with limited mobility. We do have an ensuite room on the ground floor and the self-catering apartment is also on the ground floor. Please contact us if you would like to discuss.
Children
We prefer to keep the B&B at Rua Reidh as a quiet, tranquil retreat primarily for adults. Quiet, mature teenagers may be permitted in the B&B by prior arrangement. Quiet and well behaved children over the age of 6 are welcome in our self-catering apartment. Please contact us if you would like to discuss further.
Dogs
Well-behaved dogs are welcome at Rua Reidh and you are welcome to have them sleep in your room. You are also welcome to bring dogs into the lounge and conservatory provided that other guests staying at the time are comfortable with this. We make a small additional charge for dogs.
Guests who are not dog owners are asked to note that if you dislike dogs or you are allergic to them you might want to book to stay elsewhere. We have a dog ourselves so even if there are no canine guests there will be a dog about!
Important information you need to read before booking
Rua Reidh Lighthouse is a historic listed building on a very remote headland. There are some obvious limitations of the building and location, which we list below so that you are forewarned and don’t get any surprises during your stay. If you’re uncomfortable with any of these, please go and stay somewhere else, because you won’t enjoy it here!
Weather
The lighthouse is built on an exposed headland and we get whatever the weather throws at us from just about every direction. We can get sunshine, rain, wind, snow, hail and blistering heat all on the same day and sometimes within the same hour. The only predictable thing about the weather here is its unpredictability. We can’t do anything about the weather, so please come prepared!
Mobile phone
There is no mobile phone signal at Rua Reidh – the nearest reliable signal is about 7 miles away on the road to Gairloch. We have a payphone available for guests if you need it.
Television
We have a television in our guest lounge but not in the bedrooms. The signal is not very reliable here, particularly when it’s windy, so the television may not be available. We have plenty of books that you are welcome to borrow.
Water
The water from the taps at Rua Reidh is brown, which some guests find a bit disconcerting. It is from a private supply – the colour is due to the peaty soil here. It’s double filtered and UV treated and independently tested and verified as safe, and it also tastes great as there are no chemical additives.
Wi-fi
Sorry, we cannot provide wi-fi for guests, as the slow satellite broadband that we have for our own business use cannot cope with wi-fi. There is free wi-fi available at several hotels and cafes in Gairloch.
Meals
Evening meal is a set menu served at 7pm and must be booked 24 hours in advance. If you have special dietary requirements please contact us before booking to discuss whether we can cater for you. We cannot provide evening meal at other times. We cannot sell alcohol as we do not have a licence, but you are welcome to bring your own.
